Review: Laredo by Tony Rauch

(Review for Bizarro Brigade.)

Blending science fiction, whimsy, and the bizarre, Tony Rauch presents a wealth of fanciful, surreal imagery in this collection. In these thirty-three stories Rauch contemplates such heavy topics as regret, loneliness, and ennui with a light-hearted and humorous touch not often seen in bizarro lit. (I especially liked how the stories are loosely grouped by theme–tales wistfully wonder what might have been in “the perfect season,” or go delightfully off the rails in “do you still have your leather jacket?”, two of my favorite sections–giving them a sort of continuity.)

While every story may not be entirely successful, LAREDO offers a wide array of experiences for the adventurous reader.
