Women in Horror Recognition Spotlight #7–Debbie Rochon

If you’ve watched low-budget horror films over the last fifteen years you’re no doubt familiar with actress Debbie Rochon. She’s appeared in over a hundred pictues, mostly in the medium to micro range, usually with titles like BIKINI BLOODBATH CHRISTMAS, SCREECH OF THE DECAPITATED, and DR. HORROR’S EROTIC HOUSE OF IDIOTS. (Hey, it’s a living.) She’s also turned up in a number of classic Troma releases, such as TROMEO AND JULIET and TERROR FIRMER.

Rochon often gets the backhanded compliment of being “more than just a scream queen,” as if by popping up in cheapjack horror flicks (and sometimes removing her clothes in them) she’s doing something unique by (GASP!) being a great actress. Or maybe it means that even with her striking beauty and ability to give good scream she always delivers 100%. I’ve never seen her phone in a role, even when the material is clearly beneath her talents (and trust me, she’s been in a few clunkers).

On a personal note I got to appear in a film with Debbie, when I sneaked in as an extra on Greg Lamberson’s SLIME CITY MASSACRE. We even shared a scene, though sadly we didn’t interact. I remember seeing her on the set and not recognizing her (she was in full post-slime makeup)–a shame, because I’d been looking forward to meeting her. Oh well, maybe next time.
